GGG, have you given up on methodical combat? People deserve to know.

Sorry, but methodical combat is a pipe dream.

At the end of the day arpgs are about character building. Grinding for upgrades, theory crafting combinations that are as powerful as possible. That is what keeps players engaged. Why spend hours upon hours for an upgrade if you hardly notice it is there? Grinding to overcome and overpower content is much more fun than grinding just to be able to cope with it.

For that entire concept to work you need to have a power ceiling that actually feels powerful. That means one shotting a lot of what you meet. If even with top tier gear and a meta build you need to navigate each single map and mob methodically people will switch off for a bunch of reasons. Drop rates, viability of non-optimal play, progress rate through content.

At the end of the day a pinnacle boss has to be exponentially harder than a white mob. What chance do we have of killing a pinnacle boss when even a white mob requires you to be methodical?

So clearing trash mobs is never going to be methodical by definition. It just won't work. The challenge is how do you make characters feel powerful and make each ounce of extra power worth grinding for without trivializing content? It is extremely difficult and every solution that has been tried has been met with criticism. Every annoying phase in a boss fight in poe 1 is exactly that. How do you make a boss more than a dps check?

I think they did exactly what you are preaching in the campaign. What you want is literally impossible in an arpg end game simply by definition.

You can have character building, grinding for upgrades and theory crafting while also having meaningful combat.. there is nothing that prevents that. It is also most certainly not a pipe dream. Is it your opinion that it has no place in an ARPG? Sure, that I can understand but not agree with personally.

You can feel powerful without one shotting everything on each input. There are many ways to make that possible. Such as building up to powerful moments like that but skillfully and not by default with each attack, for example.

The fundamental issue with trash mobs is that they are called that and thought of like that to begin with. For meaningful combat to take place in scenarios such as these, normal mobs need to pose some sort of challenge to overcome, obviously not nearly at the level of a pinnacle boss, but neither at the level where you don't even know what you killed because it exploded 1 screen away while also being the first time you've ever encountered those mobs. One of the problems there is density combined with low health as well to a large extent but it is a more complex problem that most definitely has a fix but I don't want to get into right now.

I was expecting the game to eventually turn into fast clearing and mowing down pretty much everything.

But it was quite a shock how quickly it turned into it. And espcially since I didn't look up a build and home cooked something (so it was far far from being anything optimal).

I was expecting to get to that level of power after like spending around a 100 hours in endgame. Not at the end of act 3.

So yeah would be nice to know what the exact philosophy on this is.
so the purpose of POE 2 is to advertise people to play POE 1 instead?
yea they wouldn't add howa to the game if they wanted methodical combat
