Tencent is what ruined PoE 1
Now, before you say that Tencent mostly manages Chinese game editions (like PoE: China) and is largely hands-off on Global, that might be fully true, however consider this:
GGG has always wanted to implement the "vision" no matter what. See their multiple attempts to implement unpopular nerfs to the game. However, every time the "vision" started to hurt GGG's bottom line, they had no choice but to backtrack on their decisions and keep doing it how the players wanted it instead of how GGG wanted it. Then, Tencent came. At first they gave GGG a lot of money for the buyout, and most likely there's still a Tencent money stream going into GGG. This is why they decided to put PoE 1 on the chopping block and create a new game that goes all-in on the "vision". People are complaining, people stopped playing the game, but they can afford not to give a single shit about the situation because of Tencent providing GGG financial security. TL;DR: Tencent gave GGG money so they can now afford to not give a shit about player demands. Last bumped on May 13, 2025, 3:43:56 AM

" If it is the other way around, then I have absolutely no idea why is GGG quadrupling down on killing its golden goose. |

" ?? Because tencent told them to grab the cash quick and bail |

They're just exploiting the loyalty of PoE1 fans, and take for granted that "they'll be back when 3.26 comes". They're probably right, which makes it even a bigger dick move in many ways.
And when we get back for 3.26, we have two options: 1) Don't spend, which gives them an excuse to not support the game any further 2) Spend, but with shared MTXs, we'll be funding PoE2 Sad as it is, it's only sad for us loyal PoE1 fans, because PoE2 is a popular game - and PoE2 and GGG will survive this. Money talks, not morals. "Swallow all your morals, it's a poor mans quality". |

" Exactly. Either way PoE 1 is fucked and won't ever receive a new league besides maybe 3.26. |

My understanding on the Chinese investment strategy is to basically frontrun the investment opportunity. It's the 100 year investment strategy which is part and parcel of Chinese life. Large abandoned skyscrapers probably ring a bell.
So the money GGG got went hard into PoE 2 development bringing in more and more developers. The crew that made PoE 1 is much smaller than the crew working on PoE 2 and it shows. Tencent money really had nothing to do with it. When you see how other companies handled their success, such as Unknown Worlds with Subnautica it becomes clear there is serendipity in success. The developers themselves may be clueless in part or in total of their own success. For Subnautica that manifested in a voiced protagonist. In the original the protagonist was mute and was fully immersed in the world. That was one of the big selling factors for Subnautica 1. They screwed the pooch with 2 by adding a highly vocal, annoying at times protagonist with a background story. Not the only thing they got wrong in sub zero but the big one. So it also goes with GGG if they had that money to make PoE 1 then PoE 1 would have been like PoE 2 from the start. Sometimes more is less and less is more. These are two such occasions. |
