They managed to revive a dead game after 10 seasons. TEN.
The lesson to be learned is that they listened to the players. They finally released the Paladin. They made adjustments to endgame content and made itemization actually good. By “good”, I mean you can FIND great gear and CRAFT incredible gear.

They are listening to the community. The problem is scale and scope.
You think because you come on here that most people are unhappy with the game. Which is just not true. Negative user bias is a real thing. You go to any game on planet earth and their forums/feedback is going to be 90% negative.
GGG listens to constructive feedback and have been since .01
I think ya'll need to realize(not you personally) that the vast majority of the community is happy with the direction of the game. They just don't come on the forum and praise.

I agree with you. I do think GGG is making strange design decisions this patch that has gone against community feedback for months now. Finding gear is almost always lackluster, and that seems to be counter to everything an ARPG is supposed to be about. The game is more about currency than items.
The problems with items (as far as I can see it) is the kiss/curse mechanics GGG is in love with. That needs to change.

That is because GGG has the entire dataset and not the extremely biased Reddit/this forum. They can see all the data and all the feedback. Which means that the experience you are speaking about is not the experience of the vast majority of players.
GGG knows what they are doing. I noticed a massive different in loot this patch as well in the last patch. They are cooking.

D4 follows the EXACT pattern every Season. It spikes at launch then takes a slow downturn after.
If you look at the steam chart (Which admittedly do not account for BNet Accounts) POE 2 actually has higher player counts. Which probably puts it in on par with D4.
D4 Season 11 DIVIDED the player base. There was A LOT of negative feedback to it. Hell, I played all previous 10 seasons and I have ZERO interest in S11. I'm having a much better time in POE 2 right now then I have had in D4 in a while.

What lesson GGG has to learn from a terrible game that doesn’t know what it is and it constantly gets reworked? Also calling gear in that game good is definitely a choice.

Here is the lesson: you can fail for 10 seasons and eventually get it right.

But they didnt get it right. Game’s still shit. Besides, PoE2 is fundamentally a good game. Its core systems and gameplay are good, unlike D4.
