The -15% exp penalty is obnoxiously bad outdated design.
" So the penalty in PoE is harsher. So what? The penalty in D2 was hardly lenient. Anyone who rushed for 99 could tell you that. Even being able to recover your corpse still means the loss of many, many hours of work at high levels. Honestly, I don't understand the obsession everyone has with level in this game. The gear system is far more in depth than anything leveling can get you. Seeing as there's no real content after 75, there's no reason to rush to level up, unless you're trying for first place on the ladder (In which case I imagine you'd deal with penalties just fine, like all of the current top players are doing). Gear means so much more than a few extra levels for what, a couple passive skill points? It hardly makes or breaks a build at that point. Even if I agreed that the penalty is only there to slow players down (which I don't, there are other reason to have the penalty), why does it matter? So the developers don't want everyone to hit 99 immediately. Is that a bad thing? I feel like we'd all be having this conversation in reverse if there was no penalty, with everyone sitting at 99 saying "this game is boring, it was too easy to level up". This isn't an MMO. The game doesn't start at 99. The level cap is supposed to be an almost impossible goal. By focusing on your level you're missing the forest for the trees. |

Hate the fact that this game is overrun by all those elitist snobs that look down on anyone complaining about the sheer random bullshit this game pulls sometimes. Well, figures, it's probably the same horde that defends this laggy, wonky piece of crap called Dark Souls and try to depict faulty gamedesign and bad technical implementation as 'challenge'.
The OP is complaining about legit things. The netcode is really terrible, targeting is terrible and balance is too. |

" This is significantly offtopic at this point, but there's nothing "laggy" or "wonky" about Dark Souls. Disagree? Watch this video where someone kills the final boss of the game without leveling up, using the weakest weapon in the game and never healing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A36YSO00ZfI That's 100% experience and skill with the game learning timings and patterns. Even at its most challenging, the difficulty in the game derives from the player's ability to correctly time their movements in combat, and just like Path of Exile, it punishes you if you make mistakes. I don't deny that there are problems with lag. I also agree that not every death will be "fair". However, that will always be the case with any online game. It's something you simply have to accept. Especially when a game launches, instability is to be expected. If you can't handle that, then I don't think this game is for you. Taking away punishment from death is taking away the threat of death. Save for Hardcore characters, death would cease to become important. Why even bother playing if there's no tension? Why try if it doesn't matter if you're good or terrible, because everyone ends up at the same point? It's not "elitism" to desire a challenge from the games you play. I would argue that the majority of games across all genres today aren't particularly challenging or punishing. Some people like punishing games. Path of Exile is one of those games. Can't those of us that enjoy this style of gameplay have this game, at least? |

" I agree with you, you should loose a lvl, then 5 lvls then 10 lvls. Now we would be talking seriously. You re so cotton skinned...grow some hide. |

This whining is why we can't have nice things for everyone. In politics, games, movies, books etc etc. If the game doesn't suit you or you don't like it, why are you still playing it? Why would you force a change on something just becuase youdon't like it, when clearly the makers/developers want it that way.
A new movie comes out - "TOO VIOLENT! STOP IT!", a new law is made: no more violent films. A new book comes out - "WAY TO MUCH SEX! STOP IT!", a new law is made: no more sexytime books. A new game comes out - "WAY TO HARD! MAKE IT SIMPLE!", the makers listen to the vocal minority: no more niched games. REALLY! Noone is forcing you to play the game, noone is forcing you to do sh*t! If this isn't you cup of tea then DO NOT PLAY IT! We live in an era so accessible that a rightclick or backspace takes you away from whatever you feel offensive, hard or boring. IF this is what developers had in mind doing this game, why not accept it and just leave it be. |

You can't handle a mere penalty in Merciless and why not cut off complaining about how much xp you have lost ?
On the contrary it even could be raised to 0%/10%/20% You are playing an H&S and xp penalty is just an obligatory mechanic. If you are fearing that much from dying, do not keep on playing Merciless. Stop being a jellyfish. "This is too good for you, very powerful ! You want - You take" Last edited by BrecMadak#3812 on Feb 5, 2013, 9:25:50 AM

It it a generation thing?
When did getting punished in games become a bad thing? I don't even know what rage qutting means, I've never done it. Without RISK there is NO REWARD. 98% of all other video games have become pussies and I literally fall asleep while playing them. Demon's souls, Dark souls, Path of Exile are some of the VERY FEW games that are released current-gen that have some penalties associated with FAILURE. Failure is a part of life, it's a part of learning and growing and getting better. Yeah yeah, You'll say "But I don't want failure in my games" well go play the 98% of other games that I won't fucking play and stay out of these. Fuck. |

I agree that the penalties could be improved - I think they should be to the tune of 5% on normal, 10-15% on cruel and maybe 20-25% on merciless?
What have you become when even nightmares fear you?
