Yes, people absolutely do quit games if they feel they are being made too easy to be worth their time... look at LE.
Heres the catch, the penalty is not a difficulty component. The penalty does not make the game harder in any way, The overall difficulty of content is not touched in the slightest.
And yet it is a difficulty component. Its what makes reaching lvl 100 difficult and not just a guaranteed outcome from playing a few days. People are way to obsessed with lvl 100, guess they must come from some of Blizzards dumpster fire arpg's. In poe lvl 100 is an achievement, its not needed nor is it a prerequisite for anything or a make or break for any build. Fact is if u want to get there learn the game and make a build that can actually do it, that process is actually what makes hardcore fans enjoy the game and come back league after league and year after year. They are the core playerbase of this game and not the casuals who play the game for a short period and move on to something else. If u remove the penalty that process becomes obsolete and without meaning cause any build can be corpse walking their way to 100 and now the hardcore playerbase will be leaving the game and they are the ones buying the majority of supporter packs.

It will. Same old record that has been playing for 12 years in poe 1 and guess what... Its still in the game cause it has a purpose. I do however think they will address the 1 portal policy at some point but thats just my guess

When a player dedicated their time, they are expecting some progression, rewards and achievements BUT NOT PUNISHMENT. What is the point playing a game when you grind for gears that enemies can outrun you, ONE SHOT YOU, has weapon range far greater than what you can see on screen and are ascendancy trials necessary? Instead, the game just strip you clean.
With due respect, I don't think having played 100 hrs reaching almost Level 90 is a 'noobie'. Maybe there are people with quick fingers or progessional but if you are targeting this segment of people, please let me know early so I can move on with other options.
There are people like me, who paid for this game, have a decent family life and wanted to enjoy the game. I am not sure how to enjoy when I am stuck fearing to play a game thinking of losing my XP and progress BACKWARDS.
Players should not be feared playing a game but enjoys it or take some test pending on luck rather than skills.
Anyway, this is my 1st game with GGG and if this goes on, it should be my last.
There are different types of players. Some want a game that functions more like a movie you need to click through. Where others enjoy games with challenge that requires effort to overcome obstacles. GGG makes games for the 2nd type.

It has nothing to do with difficulty. Anything in the game would not change in difficulty. Its an artificial progress block that comes from days where games didnt have enough content to keep players on their toes.
Ppl are not obsessed with level 100. They care about the fact that every level accounts for raw character power. If the levels 91-100 would not contribute any skill points or other bonuses at all noone would care. This whole discussion would stop instandly if this would happen. However players that like the XP loss, for whatever reason, also denie any other option. Removing it is a no, adding a seperate mode without it is a no, removing the bonuses from the last 10 levels is a no too. So even options that would mean that hard core players are untouched in tehre "achievment" endevor are denied. This leads me to believe that some players simply fear for there artificial status that noone cares about. I know these kind of discussions for various topics and they all look just like this one.
The hard core player base wouldnt leave. noone plays the game saying "oh great they have XP loss on death". They play the game because game play factors like content and variation keep them going.

And then there are games like No Mans Sky that simply add a couple of sliders and everyone plays luckily like they like and somehow the world is still spinning.

The death penalty makes the game EASIER, not harder.
A player fighting a new boss should expect to die three or four times to learn the mechanics, and then need to execute the dodge rolls, movement, proper skill timing, etc... to clear it. There should always be a significant (25% or so) chance of death.
Maps should always be ready to throw a curve ball of packs and rares that can kill you. You should not be able to regularly go ten maps without a death unless you are an elite player - and the game should never be balanced around them.
But the death penalties prevent the devs from designing content that hard. Instead the "difficulty" is simply a time sink grinding easy, no-risk content.

And you know what? I have more fun playing Visual Novels right now than playing PoE 2. That tells you how horrid the design in this game is lmao
There is no "challenge" in this game, only frustration, time wasting mechanics, fear of losing exp and map and unneeded anxiety from it all. The "difficulty" is an illusion. This is just Ruthless 2.0 and its gonna fail and die so hard if some big changes aren't made. Nobody is coming back every 3 months to this bad game. Especially not to this chore of a campaign. And I know for a fact it will die in obscurity, because you can take a look at how many people play Ruthless in PoE 1 lmao, nobody wants this slow-boring slog of a punishing game. The year is no longer 2000, and this kind of game simply cannot survive.

That just means you don’t like PoE 2
Doesn’t mean anyone else does
Your story is not everyone’s
