Btw, Contagion spreads ALL POISONS! its a 1 click that popcorns packs of mobs.
Contagion allows the usage of spell supports; Hinder support for 30% speed reduction, multiplicative with Maim (also 30%), AND with the Vines 40% speed. These mov speed reductions are a big part of the defensive layer imo.(Rare are 30% less slowed, Uniques 50% less). Enfeeble is another great defensive layer, if not using Despair.
For single target nuke, spam Toxic Growth then Gas arrow to explode the mines. Each Toxic Growth throws 8-10 mines. Theres also a Occulist Skill, a totem, that hits 100 times, dealing Chaos dmg each time a mob takes chaos dmg. Have to test, but could also be big. I use Toxic Growth + Conc Effect + Longshot + Inspiration.
Look for jewels with 13% increased magnitude of Poisons, with 2 other usable mods, plenty on sale for 1ex.
Make sure youre using a bow with HIGH PHYS DMG! Hit dmg is a big part of the overall poison DPS, compared to POE1.

How are you guys staying alive in maps? my damage is fine but I die so easily even in low level maps.
I have 85% evasion but virtually no armour, do I need armour for maps? or is there some defensive ability I am missing (I have wind dancer and ghost dance)
Keeping the distance and having good dps should be enough for mapping. I have also only evasion and progressed today into t15 maps without issues. For defense purposes I have only Wind Dancer with Blind and Cannibalism. And life flask with partial insta heal.

Something else worth mentioning : Opening interfaces pauses the game.
Given that the Poison DOT archetype doesnt have a ton of viable support gems, don't hesitate to swap 1-2 supports if struggling agaisnt a boss.
Conc effect and Deadly Poison are the better ones, afaik.
There's also the interaction between Gas Arrow and Momentum support, which I can't seem to validate. Potentially, we cast Gas Arrow, move 2m, then the Gas deals 40% More dmg for the remaining duration. Not sure at all tbh, dont quote me on that.

again, why are people ignoring chaos damage nodes in the tree? If I switch to a phys bow I take a huge hit in dps because theres so much increased chaos damage % close to ranger that I'd rather keep using a cultist bow

Poison dmg = 20% of hit's phys + 20% hit's chaos. Much easier to scale big poisons using a high phys dmg weapon. Indeed, Chaos dmg from passive tree are relevant, since the poison deals Chaos dmg. But for the weapon, you can't get high flat chaos dmg.
I'm not sure which Chaos nodes are so accessible in the tree; there are 5 nodes in the higher top corner, next to the poison nodes. Those cost 5 points to have abt 30% chaos dmg and +1 chaos skills, which is not worth it imo.

Lingering Horror, Void, Pure Chaos seem great Chaos notables, but imo theyre a bit too far. Maybe you can share your passive tree, it's still relatively early, maybe you have a pathing that's more efficient.
Otherwise, Event Horizon and Spaghettification are half notables, half keystones; they have considerable draw backs, requiring investment to palliate.
There's also 1 notable that can be anointed on Amy, saving the long travel path.

I read somewhere that the + Chaos % nodes do not apply to the poison damage ticks.

Physical bows have the advantage of rolling % increased physical damage, which can double or more the base phys of the weapon. And then, they can make use of Iron Runes for an additional 40% physical damage.
