Why POE2’s Direction Is Worrying for Veterans and Newcomers Alike

Agree 100% pretty crazy to make these changes knowing the players that have been supporting them for years would hate it.
Thank you for this post. It also explained my worries really well.
I would like to point out that the "cast on" gems nerf
made a tedious rotation loop my top concern atm.

I just want to chill with some occasional encounters of the: cc-combo-execute. Not be overly focused repeating this rotation the entire session.
I mean having to setup combos and cc as the only relevant play style gets a bit tedious
100% agree. Just decided to stopped playing my character because of all of this.
Going to follow patches to see if I wanna come back otherwise I'll wait for poe 1's next league

I have something like 3000 hours in PoE1 and I have to say I DEFINITELY appreciate the slower pace. The actual gameplay in PoE was a bit of a meme, spamming one ability to clear screams instantly and traverse the entire map in 30 seconds doing so was pretty dull.

That being said, I agree with most of what the OP said otherwise. So many of the design choices and systems in this game seem overtly hostile to the player - like they want to punish us or something.

I Want to Love POE2, But It’s Hard
As a veteran, I want to see POE2 succeed. I want it to be different, but it also needs to respect the core systems that have kept players invested in POE1 for years. Right now, it feels like GGG is prioritizing their “vision” over what actually works.

To the newer players defending these changes without understanding their long-term impact: you’re not helping. Ignoring valid criticism isn’t supporting the game; it’s enabling bad design. Constructive feedback is what helps games improve. POE2 has the potential to be great, but it needs to address these issues before it alienates the very players who’ve been its foundation for years.

Yikes. I hope they read this, and act before people become jaded. Thanks for your write up. You won't find many veterans who disagree. This will be a big test for GGG.

Great thoughts, great explanation. Especially the last point of your list!

It's depressing to think that the game will be dodge centric soulslike forever. PoE1 was my primary hobby, and I had such hope for PoE2... but everything feels like they're just not making the game I want to play. They're making intentional decisions to discard players like me that enjoyed the first game. I hope whatever player fills my spot in the future enjoys the game, but I can't help but feel bad that something I loved so much is now something I don't even want to play.
i agree on every point, especially about the complete trashed core of the predecessor

imagine tekken 8 as moba, and people say wooo i never liked tekken before, but this feels great

I'm probably one of those who think that PoE2 is unfortunately no longer for me. I can't understand how you can introduce a dodge roll in a HacknSlay and then design the bosses around this dodge roll. I have no idea how anyone can like that, but Tencent won't care much. Next Generation is real.
I find Tekken as a Moba example very apt. The dodge roll broke the game for me and I don't think that will change unless you grind away until you oneshot everything.

What's funny is Tencent might actually care more than the developers if revenue dips from lower sales of supporter packs. I doubt Tencent is supper tied into the VISION the developers have as much as seeing the company as an investment.
