XP loss on death is a good and normal thing.

Think of your level and XP in PoE2 as of a rank in most of the other games with ranking. Dota, Hearthstone, Chess, whatever..

You climb up by winning, if you die, you lose your ranking. This is a completely normal system that separates the players who rarely ever lose from those who lose too often to progress on their rank. XP loss keeps you at a level where you currently belong.

If you improve your character or skill, you will die less often and progress to the next level over time.

If you feel like you should be level 100 in PoE2, but you are not BECAUSE of XP loss on death... That is exactly the same like if a Chess player would complain that they are not ranking XXX BECAUSE their ranking got reduced on a lost match.
Of course it did!

Level 100 in PoE2 is the ultimate top. Only the best of the best ones will achieve it.
XP loss on death is a system that keeps you at the level where you currently belong.

I don't mean to offend anybody. I know it can be frustrating to lose XP, same as losing your rank in any other game, but please stop complaining and with a calm mind, think about it.

How about casual players? They don't play rank though and just wanna chill grind.

Anyway, that's why GGG has leagues. They can probably remove the penalty for Standard while keeping it for on-going leagues or change how penalty works like reduced EXP gained for 10 minutes? I'm pretty sure the devs has a lot of ways to do it better.

What does being a casual player has to do with it? 80% of us are casuals, me including.
Again, I don't mean to be rude, but what you are essentially asking is to play a Cookie Clicker.. an incremental game where you never lose and only punishment for bad play is to progress slower.
This would turn ANY game into mindless monkey-grind. There are games like that, sure, but don't expect this from PoE.

I don't get this obsession with level 100.
Do you also complain on Chess rules, that if you are not TOP rank 1 in the world, it's a ranking issue and you should not have your ranking reduced when you lose a match? Its unreasonable.

I guess all I could do in response, is challenge you to also think about it a bit more.

Spending 1000 hours or 500 hours more than a player who doesn't find that time spent meaningful doesn't make you a better player. You aren't the best of the best because you spent 500 more hours than someone else. You are simply more experienced and dedicated.

This also isn't a ranked game, and that's a poor comparison. I want to get level 100 on my character, but I don't give a fat flying f*ck what level anyone else is. My "ranking" is completely irrelevant. This isn't a race, nor is getting 100 about competition, even if you think it is.

Exp loss on death is a tried-and-true punishment method, and it actually works really well in some games. The problem occurs when you apply EXP loss to the current state of PoE2, and the current rate of EXP gain above level 90, and the current overtuned rippiness of many enemies, etc.

It just makes the currently slow and tedious endgame very unfun very quickly, and doesn't feel fair from my perspective as a player... like at all. I have played a LOT of games that have very punishing exp penalties, including massive EXP loss (such as EQ in 1999-2001). But this ain't it.

That's all there is to it.

What is it you expect to gain by getting to level 100? No content is gated behind levels and no content requires remotely close to 100 to finish I'd say most of it's even doable at 80, so that begs the question what is it about getting to level 100 that is so necessary? Why does it matter that there's exp loss it doesn't prevent you from doing anything the game has to offer.

right, spending more time doesnt make someone a better player. but why should somebody that spent half the time, get the same outcome as somebody investing the double amount?

yes, the current state has a problem with xp loss. because undeserved deaths should not be existing. if a player dies it has to be players fault, period. with that in mind xp loss is fine.

xp loss doesnt make the slow and tedious engame unfun. the endgame is unfun because its slow and tedious.

+1 Exactly
If dying costs you your map and whatever special modifiers were on that map, what justifies the additional punishment of EXP loss?

We know from the interview that they are pretty unmoving on map loss on death, as well as losing map mechanics with that. Why do we need to be punished further?

The "better" player will not die, not lose their mechanics, get more currency and grind faster, not potentially drop in Waystone tier, and ultimately achieve everything you think EXP loss is giving them.

EXP loss is an antiquated punishment system that has no place in a grind game.

What do you think is waiting for you at level 100? There is nothing you would NEED to complete any content. It's just a rank.
Do you also request your rating not to drop when you lose a match at any ranked game?

You are essentially asking PoE 2 to be have the same system as Cookie Clicker.
That would be so dumb.

Stop viewing it as punishment. Nobody is punishing you. If you die, the game simply puts you back where you belong. If you improve and stop dying, you are progressing on the next level where the challenge is slightly increased.

One current problem in this system is it makes attempting the end game bosses potentially more punishing as your level goes up.

Losing 15% exp at level 80 isn't a big deal, but losing it at level 90 is. Personally I find myself waiting to do challenging content until right after I cross the level threshold. Once I get any substantial XP built up, it makes trying a new boss not worth the risk for however long it takes me to hit the next level.

I would be in support of some kind of reduction or removal of this for end game bosses specifically, especially since they dont exactly provide much XP for success when compared to running just one map of a similar level.
This is not a ranked game. exp lost make no sense at all.
GGG should put this feature on ruthless!!!

I get where you're coming from, but I just buy an Omen of Amelioration and go give it a shot.

If I die, I lost 70ex and a few maps of xp, not a huge deal. If I don't die, great, I have the omen for the next risky run.

Just remember to take it out of your inventory after you hit next level and go do dumb stuff because you having nothing to lose.....learned the hard way.
