seems like you are bad at spritning mechanics
Lets say someone puts 300 hours into the game during a league. Are you honestly trying to tell me they will never sprint even once unintendedly whilst trying to dodge roll? When both mechanics are on the same button? That is cap. And if a player sprints instead of dodges even once and it causes a loss of experience (possibly hours of experience at level 90+). Then it is not good design.

You can't put a sprint function in a game and then try to designate when players should use it by enforcing unfair punishments. That is sloppy design.
If there is a sprint function players are going to use it constantly (instinctively). If sprinting is just for backtracking then why not simply deingage sprinting when enemies are in close approximation. That would keep sprinting as its intended purpose (only for backtracking) and disengaging sprinting in combat (would stop unintended knockdowns when dodge rolling).
Overall the game plays better when players can sprint whilst engaging in combat. And it doesn't give too much of a overall benefit besides moving quicker. But if the game is lagging (such as when doing a breach and there is 100 enemies on the screen). It is pretty common to get a sprint instead of a dodge roll at low framerate. And that can cost a good amount of time progression.
Solution.
1.remove the knockdown. (good idea)
2.Only allow sprinting when enemies are at 10m distance or something
3.replace it with increased damage taken instead of a five second knockdown. (good idea)
All three of those ideas are better than a instant death or straight to log-in solution which is currently in the game.
Do you even read what you're typing?
> You can't put a sprint function in a game and then try to designate when players should use it by enforcing unfair punishments. That is sloppy design.
Nothing "sloppy" there. You are being punished for the exact reason the devs have intended: Don't sprint with mobs around.
> If sprinting is just for backtracking then why not simply deingage sprinting when enemies are in close approximation.
Why not automatically use skills, when enemies are around? Why not automatically use flasks, when you're on low health?
> Overall the game plays better when players can sprint whilst engaging in combat. And it doesn't give too much of a overall benefit besides moving quicker.
It's literally giving you a massive advantage, because you can dodge enemies way easier.
> It is pretty common to get a sprint instead of a dodge roll at low framerate
No it's not. I'm playing a fire sorc and many, many times have complete garbage fps, because of burning ground and abyss. Yet have I never died because of your claim. Then only reason for people dying this way is 1. spamming every 0.1s space, or 2. holding space for way too long.
You clearly don't understand the implications of altering mechanics.

Sprinting is tied to the dodge button. Sprinting can engage when trying to dodge. Happens pretty often actually. And the punishement is a five second knockdown (terrible game design).
I'm not going to read the rest of what you posted as you clearly are not reading what I'm posting (as I've stated unintended sprinting whilst trying to dodge is the main issue). Yet your'e still whaffling on about something else.
Yeah, no wonder you have problems with sprinting, because you literally can't, and refuse to, read.

Sprint is designed for backtracking, not for running through mobs. Don't sprintnear mobs - won't be knocked down.
pssss, don't tell people what they're obviously doing wrong, they don't like that.
I never understand why people use an mechanic for something it's obviously not intended for.
It's like hitting a bigass mob with no equip, dying and then complaining about it.
Seems like you have problem reading and i agree with OP.. Sprint shouldnt the same button as dodge. There are many times that i unintentionally sprint while dodging and few cases died .
No, seems like you have a problem reading and understanding, since they sprint problem is entirely a pebcak thing, as stated in my other comment.

I have more than that and yes, I never had a knock back when dodging.
Dodge is a simple click, sprinting you need to actually hold the click.

No one cares about one persons experience playing the game. You have two mechanics on the same button. One of those mechanics can cause instant character death (practically). So it's shit design end of story. Statistically if you take the entire player base, hundreds of thousands of people are going to get unintended sprinting instead of dodge rolling sometimes because both mechanics are on the same button. So it is poorly implemented. Basic common sense.
Now getting unintended core movement mechanic is not good. But tolerable. Getting knockdown for five seconds for it though is assinine.

Sure, "no one". Typical argument when you can't accept the fact, that it's not a game, but a pebcak thing.
But keep telling yourself the game is at fault.

Exactly, we don't care about one persons experience playing the game. hint hint

One persons opinion. And yet they had to patch this mechanic for the exact reasons I'm claiming. So it's a bit more than one person. And I guarantee you they will have to patch it again.

If you check the patchnotes you can see they already adressed that issue and theres now a small window (1sec) after sprint started when you cant be knocked down.
