Maven memory game feels stupid
" It isn't, it might be the first displayed to you in such an obvious manner but a huge number of boss mechanics in all games are memory checks. You will have completed other ones without ever noticing that is what it is - the difference with Maven is it isn't obfuscated in any way she just dumps it infront of you and says i'll kill you if you fail :p Its also there because GGG have a fundamental problem designing challenging bosses with how the game has developed over time, hard checks like this are one of the only ways to actually difficulty gate players where they don't just shit on everything with glass cannon portal runs. Whether that is appropriate or not is another argument entirely but I think you'd be surprised how many players would opt for memory game if given the choice of memory game or 1 portal for example. |

Agreed with above: ALL boss encounters are memory games. You need to memorize cues and signs of attacks in order to dodge and counter effectively. These are all "memory games", they are just generally shorter and easier.

" Exactly, the difference here is that the "game" is much longer and harder, already being in the middle of a hellish environment with the pressure of having to succeed absolutely because it is mandatory for atlas completion, and that a failure means hours of collecting 10 crescents to... try again, not to mention the xp loss etc. If the message is "f*ck you casual gamers, we don't want you here", well, I'd say: mission accomplished! :) I know that poe is not really casual oriented, but even for half-casuals the bar is really high and yet mandatory. |
