Hard crashing PC locks up

"
Dropping by to say that I was experiencing heavy freezing needing hard reboots and the only thing that stopped them for good is the following for my specific PC:

SPECS -
Win 11 24H2
Ryzen 7 7700x
RTX 4080
MSI MAG Tomahawk x670e
32gb ram (currently non-Expo bc this game freaks me out)

1. In BIOS I set the TDP for CPU to 65w (from 105w)
2. In BIOS Disabled integrated CPU GPU (not sure this matters)
3. In power plan settings in Windows, set to "Power Saver" - this matters! Don't use Balanced or High Performance...
4. Under the advanced settings for the power plan, set the max processor state to 95%, not 100%.
* Did not find that turning off cores, using BES, or anything else did anything.

IN GAME:
Gonna vary per hardware, personally using DLSS on Balanced to handle the performance hit from Power Plan, but can consistently play at 120fps on maps, smooth, with drops to about 60-70fps in towns (not really an issue). Keep multithreading on.

I went from having consistent freezing and 90c temp spikes on the CPU when loading, to having 50c CPU temps on loading and no freezing at all. I set this up three days ago, and have been playing for about 5-6 hours a day since with no crashing or any hiccups at all.

It sucks, I don't understand it. I don't like it. But I have peace of mind.

This also works for my 5800x/3080 system, but that targets 60fps. Not sure of the impact on lower hardware.

Just as another data point, using DLSS and setting Max Processor State to 99% are helping me. Also, clearing shader cache folders prior to game launch and removing affinity for two CPUs in Process Lasso helps. And keeping an eye on my second monitor for HWiNFO sensor data to make sure my PC isn't about to explode. I guess the idea is to limit how hard the CPU is ALLOWED to work in POE2, because heaven knows it will work it hard.

My mobo setting is at tdp 105 watts but I don’t have any thermal throttling when I crash. CPU temps during gaming 55-65c and 70-78 loading maps, gpu 55c. I will try your setting see wat happens.

This is my third built PC and have never seen the temp spikes like that either. I have had the pc for about a year, played plenty of intensive games for long periods and never broke above 80c spikes before. Seeing it definitely freaked me out.

Who knows man.

Did you ever stress test your cpu with cinebench ? 80C-84C is normal for my 9800x3d cpu running multi or single thread 15 min stress test. I have seen it in other games while loading shaders like Ready or Not very cpu intensive game. AMD cpus go to 90c then throttle down. With spikes to 80c you won’t damage your AMD cpu.

In poe2 I get 55-65c in game an 70-79c loading, gpu 55c. I play @4k native no DLSS, max setting 120fps no drops. When I crash mu CPU is at 55-65c.

Yeah I always do when first building the machine. Mine was similar, nothing out of the ordinary since it's been built until I tried loading some zones in the game.

Just recovered from my worst crash yet.

PC just shut off after killing the Boss on the Dreadnaught (it crashed in the middle of the cutscene that plays after beating that boss - I wasn't even actively playing at that moment), rebooted and then wouldn't load to desktop and crashed again right after Windows Login screen. Same loop happened 3 times in a row.

I had to force it into Safe Mode and then used system restore.

(And this is using only 12 out of the 16 cores)

Everything is back to normal now.

I don't know what the hell POE2 is doing to our PCs, but it's not good. GGG needs to fix this ASAP.

i crashed on the cutscene after act 2 as well on day 1, so there's probably some issue going on there.

but today i had a crash when logging in to my character, and i also had a system repair cycle which has never happened before until today.

honestly pretty worrying since i do want to keep playing but having these sorts of crashes are a bit scary to deal with.

I think there is a problem with loading shaders. It would be a good idea to tone down cpu usage when loading maps. I can wait 3 sec longer.

I've been way too overeager in trying to troubleshoot these issues and posting things that have worked for me or at least did for a period of time. All of the random "hey try this" posts were probably unnecessary or misleading. That wasn't my intent but I apologize for that. Here's to hoping a fix comes soon. Cheers.
PoE2: A good, giving game
had this happen at release on loading screens mostly town portal was about to refund
if i set compability to windows 8 (i googled) its better but still happens bluescreens with windows stopcode only on this game, hadnt had a bluescreen before i can remember
im 32 hours in and had like 10 or 15 freezes so all in all i pushed trough and like this game, but would appreciate any help i can get.
might clean my pc today and install nvidia driver fresh with as its old and i just kept settings but other than that i cant think i have an issue on my pc or hardware

my build is 64gb ram, 7800x3d, 3090 playing in 4k dlls to quality 120 fps, i think running this game shouldnt be an issue.
