Is the problem Jonathan?

Whether you like it or not the POE franchise has been successfull based on its replayability and this league has no replayability

And yet 0.2 shows same level of player retention as any PoE1 league, just with bigger player number.

Yet you would expect a higher than previous retention level due to the larger player numbers?

The next league will be a wake up call if things stay the same.

We all have opinions about games we enjoy and have supported, our opinions when taken as a huge snapshot can or should influence the game one way or the other going forward.
Been here since Open Beta.
No, problem is not Jonathan. The problem is Chris Wilson being taken out from the equation in designing the game. In most of the interviews between content creator and Mark + Jonathan, both Mark and Jonathan provide a counter to each other design "visions". However, PoE 2 is built upon the game design foundation of Path of Exile 1 in which Chris Wilson play a major role in the equation back then when designing PoE 1, but now he is gone or doesn't have major role in the equation.

Start scrapping all PoE 1 system from PoE 2, start designing it like its own game that seems to be "promised" to focus on action on combat. Neither the combat / action or itemization in PoE 2 is good. Everything is still designed and balanced around trading and itemization. The game will ended up have the same one-button clear playstyle of PoE 1 where resource acquisition efficiency is the key to success, but lacking in itemization and customization PoE 1 have.

Instead of hovering around 100k they'd probably have at least 125k but instead they're letting LE take their lunch money.
You don't know that. Maybe they would be sitting at 75k. It's easy to make these claims when you're not in the actual position of consequences.
Some people here are a little too obssessed with steamcharts. The thing is PoE2 is more popular and has more retention than PoE1, D3, D4 and LE. ARPGs are a niche genre nowadays, a lot of people doesn't like ARPG, they don't like grinding, etc all they want is a story game and move on. Jonathan should not listen to these people.

I mean, if we look at the timeline, we could come up with some sort of conspiracy theory.

In 2019, Chris Wilson announced PoE2 as the "4.0 Expansion of PoE1", that will modernise this decade old game.

In 2023, Jonathan Rogers announced that they changed their mind after 4 years of getting supporter packs, and that PoE2 will not be a PoE1 expansion anymore, but instead a separate game.

Then they got a lot of negative feedback from ppl who were able to test PoE2, that it's nothing like "Path of Exile".

A bit later, Chris Wilson was rarely in office and only voiced a few "PoE1 League Announcements", but had no involvement in the development anymore, aside from his personal project "Ruthless".

Then, around a year of advertising PoE2 with the new graphics and classes, we got the PoE2 "Early Access Announcement". There, they revealed that the access to PoE2 EA will cost ppl 30 bucks, unless you already spend at least 500 bucks.

Now, we know Chris Wilson is basically gone.

So, what's the tinfoil here?
GGG leadership already knew that it was highly likely that a huge part of the PoE community does not like PoE2, aside from the graphics and lore, because everything else that makes "Path of Exile" Path of Exile - is not present there.
Setting up an "entry price" for EA is to compensate for the financial loss they will face when many PoE vets aren't interested in "Diablo 5".

Sure. On "PoE2 EA realease" I would've called that just tinfoil stuff, but now, with all the additional information we got since then, the interviews where the "viSiOn" is more important than improving the game and making it the game the PoE1 commnunity is asking for - I am not so sure about it anymore just being tinfoil stuff.

Just milk your old fans one last time and get another "target audience".
Sounds hard, but so far - GGG hasn't shown something that would indicate something else.

You got a point though I don't think it's all about money alone. It's about the VISION™

We need St. Chris to save us!
I disagree with like 80% of what he says so maybe
+1 OP
yeah he is. Bring Chris back otherwise the game will be destroyed
Is the problem Jonathan? No, but he could be the solution. The problem is really a divided community, toxicity in said community and the expectations of the game that each "side" has, the difference in what people want varies FAR too much.

That is the problem.
Starting to think he is the problem.
