Endgame Dev comments on Portals.
" Agreed. The important thing is that deaths feel fair. 99/9% of the time, I died because I made a bad decision. Then it's just a matter of improving your character and learning the game. |

Just because their first response was they are sticking to one attempt per map doesn't mean they won't change it in the future. The majority of the feedback is about one portal for another month? Maybe they consider it.

" If its only one more month before it gets fixed, great! As long as we get more portals before full release that is good. Right now, the only reason I can think of to keep One Portal is developer Ego. That's not necessarily a bad thing to have. GGG should have an Ego. It only becomes foolish when its the only real defense against the playerbase. If thats a hill someone want to die on, I can't actually stop them. I'll just be part of the mob charging up that hill I guess. |

" This, pretty much. GGG is known for listening to its playerbase, but only after repeated calls for buffs and league mechanic reworks (barring some exceptions they don't heed, like melee reworks). The thing most people forget or don't realize is that GGG tends to walk out overtuned content that they then scale back after a few weeks of player complaints. They're engaged in a constant tug-of-war with their players. If we want to see more changes to the endgame, we're going to have to keep the pressure on and keep complaining. Nothing wrong with one portal so long as the game is balanced around it.
But if the boss is going to one shot you. And the next time you can get to that same boss is after another week of grinding? Yeah, not the way to keep players happy :) |

They'll have to change it eventually, there's no way around it unless they get really creative - which by now, they weren't.

Dark Souls is one of the fairest games of all time. It's also punishing. It CAN be punishing and still be a great game BECAUSE it is incredibly fair.
If you do not have the ability to make your game as fair as Souls then you should never make it as punishing as Souls, let alone more punishing (which PoE2 is, by far). Devs who do not understand this have made many bad games by misunderstanding Souls. Don't fall into the trap GGG. Last edited by RedaOu#0533 on Jan 12, 2025, 10:43:03 PM

I like a challenge, but the loss of xp is ridiculous with some of these mobs. I had a bramble monster boss run at me with like 100% speed in a t15 map. I dodged as soon as he entered my screen but he had corpse explosion and I died instantly because there were corpses everywhere.
Unavoidable deaths like that are in no way fun and there's no amount of skill that can overcome it. Monsters shouldn't have abilities like corpse explosion. Stuff like this just for us me to walk on eggshells the entire map and also forces backtracking because I will avoid breaches and delirium until I complete the map |

" Honestly, At this point it's clear GGG wants what GGG wants. That's really all there is to it. Whoever is in charge values these mechanics, that's why they won't get changed. I'm guessing it's an ego problem, because it usually is. When game companies leave in mechanics that piss players off, this has always almost been the case, outside of the mechanic being used to bring in more money. They both can be true too. Like you said. Other games figured this out. Final Fantasy Online is a great example of this too. First game was hot dog shit water. Second game, they went back and remade everything, now it's super popular, and well received. They heavily relied on player feedback to do this too. GGG could do this too, but it would mean putting aside ego's and listening to all the players leaving the game. And I highly doubt this will ever happen, because I'm guessing at least a few higher ups in the company really value this mechanic. I mean, they could just make it optional, but instead they're forcing everyone to partake in it. If they want to make the game their way. That's okay. There's nothing wrong with making a small game that appeals to a small demographic. But I just don't understand why they separated the game, and now they're sticking to these old mechanics like they're the lifeblood of the game. They could be experimenting with PoE 2, like many early access games do, but instead what we're getting is largely just a copy-paste of PoE 1. Not even sure why they spent almost 5-6 years working on PoE 2 if it's just going to be PoE 1-2. Last edited by Akedomo#3573 on Jan 12, 2025, 10:58:17 PM
