How does GGG plan to make money?
inb4 anything: I did not read the whole thread.
I, for one, wouldn't mind paying them some cash to buy the game (like Guild Wars I mean, not subcriptions fees). Supporting developers who actually want to develop these kinds of awesome games, instead of hopping onto the theme-park train, is a good thing. As it will have some kind of item shop, I just hope it won't contain Equip which actually changes anything besides the appearance - I wouldn't mind stuff like XP Boosts though, why not let people pay if they want to advance faster? Aint like other people wouldn't catch up, going at it in their own pace. Im guessing that there could be some kind of "VIP Status", too. Like, only people with VIP Status can create guilds. I just hope that there wont be specific areas/overpowered classes that are only for "paying customers" since it would make this a pay 2 win and we dont want that, do we? |

I just paid for d2.
I haven't been doing much research on it because I want to be surprised and enjoy all the new stuff piece by piece. I understand now that my $60 has turned into a mere investment as it is also going to include a Cash Shop. BOOOOOOOOO. I would gladly pay 60bucks for POE. Infact, I probaly will. I'm going to fraps the whole transaction and post it on blizz forums, just to give them a middle finger. |

" Agreed, it would be similar to RuneScapes Memebers/Nonmembers. It could turn out where F2P players slowly lose access to newer patches and of new regions. One of the reasons i never got into RS, you couldn't travel the whole map. Special paid areas, could also lead to special paid items. Uh oh. Also, if PoE ever asked for donations i'm sure they would make a hefty sum of money from the players. I've yet to play the game, but it looks awesome so far and if its good, keeps me playing, id definitively donate. Also
Spoiler

I'm always amused by people basically stating:
"There better not be any pay-2-win items, because I never plan on paying any money whatsoever!" If you don't plan on investing, you don't really have much ground to stand on with regard to what should and shouldn't be done in terms of revenue generation. You're playing for free. If this company ever chose to start selling advantages, I'd completely understand why. There are very few successful micro-transaction games that do not sell some type of advantage. A few examples: - More powerful items - XP boosters - More inventory/bank slots Etc. Etc. Battlefield Heroes actually started off selling vanity-type items, but the game was failing. They ended up switching to some minor pay-to-win content, and their revenue increased after the change >>>>> Ben Cousins - General Manager of Easy (EA) Paying To Win? http://www.slideshare.net/bcousins/paying-to-win It's 40 minutes long, but he discusses how adding slight "pay to win" advantages in Battlefield Heroes doubled their revenue without loss of player activity. He also gives a few examples of how people sent them angry emails and threatened to quit, but ended up paying for items. Empty threats are very common in these types of situation. ;) *Disclaimer* I'm not advocating P2W items, but I am very aware that they can, and do, create lots of revenue.
